The upper is cut from Horween's Color 8 Shell Cordovan, a leather made from the dense connective tissue of horse hides through a six-month vegetable tanning process that produces a surface with unmatched depth and durability. Shell cordovan doesn't crease — it rolls — and develops a mirror-like patina over decades of wear.
The double leather outsole is attached via Goodyear welt construction, allowing for multiple resoles through Alden's factory restoration program or any competent cobbler. At roughly $957, the math looks steep until you factor in a 30-year lifespan with two or three resoles: approximately $32 per year for shoes that improve with age.
