The jacket is built from 6-ounce waxed cotton — a heavy, tightly woven fabric that repels water naturally and develops deep character with age and use. The four-pocket design, throat latch, and bi-swing back are all functional details carried forward from the original pattern.
Waxed cotton is inherently repairable and renewable: a tin of Belstaff wax dressing and 30 minutes restores the waterproof barrier, and tears in the fabric can be patched or darned by any competent tailor. Belstaff offers a reproofing and repair service through their retail locations.
The Trialmaster has been worn by everyone from Steve McQueen to Che Guevara, but its longevity claim rests on the material, not the mythology. Owners report 20-30 year lifespans with periodic rewaxing.
At approximately $650, the cost per year over two decades is roughly $32. The Trialmaster is expensive because heavy waxed cotton is expensive to source and difficult to sew.
That cost buys a jacket that does not need replacing.
