The anatomically contoured cork-latex footbed molds to the wearer's foot over the first few weeks, creating a custom fit that supports the arch, metatarsal, and heel in a way that flat sandals cannot. The oiled leather straps are adjusted via a simple buckle and age gracefully, darkening and softening with wear.
The real BIFL case is repairability: Birkenstock sells replacement footbeds, buckles, straps, and EVA outsoles, and their official resoling service restores worn pairs to near-new condition for roughly $50 to $70. A $120 pair of Arizonas resoled twice costs $260 total over fifteen or more years of warm-weather wear — roughly $17 per year.
The cork footbed is the component that truly lasts, holding its molded shape for a decade or more. Birkenstock offers a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects, but the resoling program is the real warranty.
This is the sandal that orthopedists recommend and that owners refuse to discard.
