The Islay is built on the 365 last with a Goodyear welted construction using Scotch grain leather uppers — a pebbled texture that hides scuffs and repels water better than smooth calf. The Dainite studded rubber sole provides all-weather traction without the fragility of leather soles, and the storm welt adds an extra barrier against moisture penetration at the sole-upper junction.
Every pair passes through over 200 individual hand operations during construction. The Goodyear welt is the engineering detail that makes this a generational purchase: when the sole wears through after years of use, any competent cobbler can stitch on a new one without touching the upper.
Crockett & Jones also operates its own refurbishment service, which includes resoling, reheeling, and re-lasting. At approximately $700, this places the Islay at the entry point of the heirloom tier.
Over a 25-year lifespan with two resoles at roughly $150 each, the total cost of ownership is $1,000 — or $40 per year for a boot that looks appropriate in both a boardroom and a country pub.
