The upper is box leather -- full-grain with a sealed finish that resists stains, liquids, and kitchen spills -- stapled to a rigid polyurethane rocker bottom that absorbs shock and promotes natural walking mechanics. The padded instep collar holds the foot securely without laces or buckles, and the wide toe box provides room for toe splay during extended standing.
Dansko manufactures the Professional in their own factory, with the uppers handcrafted and finished by skilled leatherworkers. The PU outsole will wear through after approximately 3 to 5 years of daily professional use, and while Dansko does not offer an official resoling program, several cobblers specialize in PU sole replacement for clogs.
At roughly $130, the cost works out to approximately $35 per year for daily wear -- competitive with replacing $40 budget clogs annually. The back-open design is not for everyone, and the break-in period requires patience.
