The G-1000 fabric, Fjallraven's proprietary blend of polyester and cotton, provides wind resistance and abrasion protection that improves with Greenland Wax applications. Like traditional waxed cotton, the G-1000 surface can be tuned by the owner: more wax for wet conditions, less for breathability in milder weather.
This renewability eliminates the degradation timeline that synthetic waterproof membranes impose. The jacket's clean Scandinavian design includes hand-warmer pockets, a chest pocket, and internal mesh pockets, all secured with snap closures and YKK zippers.
Fjallraven operates a formal repair service and sells replacement parts including zippers, snaps, and drawcords. The brand's sustainability commitment extends to keeping products in service rather than replacing them, which aligns directly with the BIFL philosophy.
At $300-$350, the Greenland costs roughly $15 per year over a 20-year service life with periodic rewaxing. The jacket that crossed Greenland in 1968 is the same jacket available today, and that continuity is the point.
