The straight-leg, button-fly design is the template from which every other jean derives. The current 501 uses 12.
5-ounce cotton denim that softens and fades predictably with wear, developing the individualized character that raw denim enthusiasts prize. The button fly eliminates the most common failure point of modern jeans: the zipper.
When a zipper fails, the jeans are often discarded. Buttons are trivially reattached by any tailor.
The 501's construction uses five pocket styling with copper rivets at stress points, chain-stitched hems, and bartacked pocket openings — details that have been refined over a century and a half. At roughly $50, the 501 is one of the most accessible BIFL entries on this list.
The denim is repairable: crotch blowouts can be darned, knees can be patched, and the fabric accepts visible mending beautifully. Levi's SecondHand program accepts worn jeans for resale and recycling.
