The 1880 collection represents their premium Goodyear-welted line, and the Bedale brogue boot is its most versatile expression. The full-grain calf leather upper is cut from hides that Loake sources from tanneries they have worked with for decades, and the Goodyear welt construction allows complete resoling — a critical BIFL feature that glued shoes cannot match.
The leather sole with rubber heel inserts provides the formality of a dress boot with enough grip for city sidewalks. The 1880 last shapes offer a slightly rounder toe box than Church's or Edward Green, making them more forgiving for wider feet without sacrificing elegance.
At roughly $350, the Bedale sits in the gap between mass-market boots that last two years and bespoke footwear that costs four figures. A resole every three to five years at $80 to $120 extends the lifespan indefinitely — 20 years is conservative with proper care.
Loake's factory repair service handles resoling and refurbishment at reasonable rates. British shoemaking at its most pragmatic: built to be worn hard and maintained forever.
