The current 55L is built from 900-denier recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate that shrugs off abrasion, moisture, and the kind of abuse that airline baggage handlers, river guides, and mountain expedition teams dish out daily. A Field Mag contributor lived out of the original 2004 Black Hole for two years as a raft guide — the bag outlasted the job.

The #10 YKK zippers are the same grade used in commercial luggage costing three times more, and the Duraflex buckles and recycled polyester webbing are built to the same standard. Patagonia's Ironclad Guarantee backs it for life against defects, and the Worn Wear program handles repairs when the inevitable trail scuff needs patching.

At $169, the cost-per-year math over a 15-year lifespan comes to roughly $11 — less than a single checked bag fee. The Black Hole earns its name by swallowing gear whole and never giving out.
