M. Williams has hand-built the Craftsman in Adelaide, Australia since the 1930s, and its defining feature is structural: the upper is cut from a single piece of yearling leather, so the boot has just one seam at the heel instead of the dozen stitched panels that give cheaper boots their failure points.

Fewer seams means fewer places to crack, stretch, or split. The Goodyear welt makes the boot water-resistant and fully resoleable, and R.

M. Williams runs an in-house recraft service that will resole, reheel, and replace the elastic gussets, pull tabs, and lining — effectively rebuilding a worn pair to original condition.

The Chelsea silhouette dresses up under trousers and down with denim, which is why a single pair often replaces several lesser shoes. At roughly $549, the Craftsman is an investment, but ten to twenty years of service is commonly reported, and the recraft program extends that further for a fraction of replacement cost.

Spread over fifteen years with one recraft, ownership runs near $40 per year. The Craftsman is the national boot of Australia because it was designed to be rebuilt, not retired.
