50 at a Harley-Davidson dealership in Long Island City, New York. Nearly a century later, the Perfecto is still made by Schott in their Union, New Jersey factory using heavyweight steerhide leather that only improves with age.

The hide is thick enough to provide genuine abrasion protection at motorcycle speeds while developing a patina that tells the story of every ride, every drop, and every year on the road. The asymmetric front zip, snap-down lapels, and zippered slash pockets have been copied by every fashion house in the world, but the original Schott construction — with its hand-set snaps, heavy-duty zippers, and quilted lining — remains the standard.

The leather is effectively indestructible under normal wear; Perfectos from the 1950s are still in regular use. At approximately $900, the Perfecto is an heirloom purchase, but the cost-per-year calculation over a multi-decade lifespan is remarkably favorable.

Schott offers repair services for their jackets, and any leather worker can service the zippers and lining. Marlon Brando wore one.

The Ramones wore them. A century of cultural history backs the claim that the Perfecto is the definitive motorcycle jacket.
