The body is machined from a single billet of 6061-T6 aluminum with Type III hard anodizing, and the electronics are potted in thermally conductive epoxy -- meaning the entire circuit board is encased in a solid block that is impervious to shock, moisture, and vibration. Owners in the flashlight community have subjected these lights to drop tests from two stories, submersion tests, and vehicle run-over tests without failure.
The single-cell AA format means batteries are available everywhere on Earth, and the light runs on alkaline, lithium primary, or NiMH rechargeable cells without modification. Gene offers a lifetime no-questions-asked warranty, and he personally handles every repair.
At roughly $90, the MDC 1AA costs more than a gas station flashlight -- but it is also the last flashlight a person will ever need to buy. Output is a practical 260 lumens on high, sufficient for any EDC task without the theatrical lumen wars that plague the category.
This is what over-engineering in service of reliability looks like.
