The vacuum-fill mechanism holds over 2ml of ink — roughly three times what a cartridge/converter pen manages — and the plunger system has fewer moving parts than a piston filler, which translates directly to fewer failure points over decades of use. The 14-karat gold nib is manufactured in-house at Pilot's Hiratsuka factory, where each nib is individually tested for flow and flexibility before leaving the line.

The demonstrator barrel in amber, smoke, or clear resin reveals the ink level at a glance and is made from a proprietary resin blend that resists crazing and discoloration over years of exposure to inks and solvents. The balance point is calibrated for extended writing sessions — this is the pen that novelists, journalists, and engineers carry daily without wrist fatigue.

Pilot's repair service can restore any Custom-series pen to factory specification, including nib replacement and barrel polishing. At roughly $270, the cost-per-year over a 30-year writing life is $9.

Compare that to a lifetime of disposable pens and ink cartridges. The Custom 823 does not announce itself.

It writes.
