It is the world's first retractable fountain pen, and six decades later, no competitor has matched the elegance of its click mechanism. A spring-loaded trap door seals the 18-karat gold nib when retracted, preventing the ink from drying out — a problem that kills most fountain pens left uncapped.
The nib unit is a self-contained cartridge that unscrews for cleaning or replacement, and Pilot offers nib units in extra-fine through broad, allowing owners to change writing characteristics without buying a new pen. The brass body provides satisfying heft at 30 grams, and the clip placement near the nib end positions the pen naturally for writing when clipped to a pocket.
Pilot accepts both proprietary cartridges and the CON-40 converter for bottled ink, keeping ongoing costs minimal. At roughly $160, the Vanishing Point competes with pens costing three times as much.
Pilot backs it with a lifetime warranty on the nib and mechanism. Replacement nib units, converters, cartridges, and clips are all available.
This pen has earned its 60-year production run.
