The piston mechanism is the same basic design used in pens costing ten times as much, and TWSBI sells every internal component individually: piston units, barrels, sections, nib assemblies, and O-rings, all for a few dollars each. This parts availability is the Eco's defining BIFL characteristic.
When an O-ring dries out or a barrel cracks from an accidental drop, the repair costs $3 and takes five minutes. The 1.
76ml ink capacity is among the largest in its class, reducing refill frequency for daily writers. The JoWo steel nib writes smoothly out of the box and accepts standard JoWo nib swaps if a different line width is desired.
At $35, the Eco costs less than most disposable pen budgets over a year, and the total cost of ownership including replacement parts over a decade is under $60. TWSBI proved that repairability and affordability are not mutually exclusive in writing instruments.
