Its strongest buy-it-for-life argument is not the tool in isolation but the platform and the repair network behind it: the M18 battery system has stayed forward- and backward-compatible since 2008, and Milwaukee runs roughly twenty factory service centers plus hundreds of authorized shops, publishes exploded diagrams, and caps out-of-warranty repair under a flat-rate program. The tool carries a five-year warranty; batteries are covered separately for three.
Honest limits keep it at the Certified tier rather than higher. This is a cordless tool, so battery packs degrade over years and carry a recurring replacement cost, and the electronic control board is not always sold as a serviceable sub-part.
Dust ingress and bearing wear are the documented failure modes under heavy grinding. What earns its place is repairability: a fifteen-year-stable battery platform and a real service infrastructure mean a 2880-20 can be kept running far longer than a disposable grinder, at roughly $149 for the bare tool.
