The Large model uses NASA-grade ceramics that are kiln-fired at over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a shell that is virtually impervious to weather, heat cycling, and time. The ceramic walls provide insulation so efficient that the Egg maintains 225 degrees for 18 hours on a single load of lump charcoal, or reaches 750 degrees for pizza in minutes.
Big Green Egg backs the ceramics with a limited lifetime warranty, and the aftermarket accessory ecosystem is enormous -- plate setters, pizza stones, rib racks, and conveGGtor inserts all extend its capability. Replacement gaskets, fire grates, and fireboxes are available directly from the manufacturer.
At roughly $1,100 for the Large, this is a significant investment. But owners routinely report 15-20 years of heavy use with zero structural degradation.
The cost-per-year at $55 over two decades replaces a string of gas grills that rust out every five years. Ceramic does not corrode, does not warp, and does not quit.
