Where most sub-$200 drip machines brew lukewarm and under-extract, the Connoisseur's 1500-watt heater reaches optimal temperature fast and holds it throughout the cycle. The stainless steel thermal carafe eliminates the hot plate that burns coffee and burns out heating elements in cheaper machines.

Construction is straightforward: a heating element, a showerhead, and a carafe. The 2-year warranty covers defects, and the machine's simplicity means there is little to go wrong beyond the heating element, which is a standard repair.

Bonavita's optional pre-infusion mode blooms grounds the way a pourover would. At around $100, the Connoisseur competes with machines costing three times as much — including the Technivorm — in blind taste tests.

It lacks the Moccamaster's hand-built Dutch pedigree, but the coffee in the cup does not know the difference. For daily drip brewing without ceremony, this is the rational choice.
