The flat-bottom design with three drainage holes produces an even extraction that is far more forgiving of pour technique than V60-style cones, making it the preferred brewer for competition baristas and meticulous home brewers alike. The stainless steel version — as opposed to the ceramic or glass models — is essentially indestructible.
Drop it, throw it in a pack, wash it however you want. There are no moving parts, no gaskets, no electronics, nothing to break.
The 185 size brews 16 to 26 ounces, the sweet spot for one to two cups. Made in Yokohama, Japan, by a company that has been manufacturing coffee equipment since 1958.
The proprietary wave filters create a paper barrier between coffee and metal, keeping the brew clean while the corrugated walls ensure airflow and drainage. At roughly $35 for the stainless model, this is a lifetime coffee brewer with zero maintenance cost and zero electricity requirement.
The cost per cup over 20 years approaches zero. Kalita does not need to sell replacement parts because there is nothing to replace.
