5-quart Round Cocotte is the workhorse of their line. Each piece is sand-cast from iron, hand-finished, and coated with Staub's proprietary black matte enamel — a surface that, unlike glossy competitors, can be seasoned and develops non-stick properties over time.
The self-basting lid features internal spikes that continuously redistribute condensation back onto food, producing measurably moister braises than flat-lidded alternatives. The cast iron walls are thick enough to hold heat through a full Dutch oven bread bake without temperature cycling.
Staub backs this with a lifetime warranty covering all manufacturing defects — and their track record of honoring claims is well-documented. The knob is oven-safe to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and replacement knobs and accessories are sold directly by the brand.
At approximately $350, the initial outlay is steep. But cast iron does not degrade — it outlasts the owner.
Over 30 years, the cost per year is under $12. The Staub Cocotte is not cookware that gets replaced.
It is cookware that gets inherited.
