The 7075 aluminum shafts are the same alloy used in aerospace applications -- it bends before it breaks, which means a stumble or a fall produces a fixable bend rather than a catastrophic snap that carbon fiber poles suffer. The dual FlickLock adjustable length system eliminates the internal twist-lock mechanism that corrodes and slips in cheaper poles, and each FlickLock is independently replaceable.
Carbide tips, rubber tip protectors, and trekking baskets are all available as replacement parts from Black Diamond. The padded foam grips absorb sweat and provide traction without the slippery feel of cork in wet conditions.
At roughly $60 for the pair, these poles occupy the rational middle ground between disposable $20 poles that collapse on the first steep descent and $200 carbon fiber poles that shatter on impact. The cost-per-year over 8-10 years of regular trail use is under $7.
Every component that wears is replaceable, which is the definition of BIFL design.
