The design has remained fundamentally unchanged for over a century because it does not need changing. The leather conforms to the rider's anatomy over the first few hundred miles, creating a custom fit that no foam or gel saddle can replicate.

The copper rivets resist corrosion, the steel rails are standard diameter for universal seat post compatibility, and the tension bolt allows adjustment as the leather naturally stretches over decades. Every component is replaceable: leather tops, rivets, rails, and hardware are all sold separately by Brooks.

Saddle reskinning services exist for B17s that have seen twenty or thirty years of use. At roughly $130, the cost-per-year over a twenty-year lifespan is $6.

50 — less than two flat tire repairs. Touring cyclists and commuters on r/cycling and r/BuyItForLife consider the B17 the definitive long-distance saddle.

Brooks saddles from the 1970s are still in daily use. A saddle that molds to one rider and lasts a lifetime because it was designed to do exactly that.
