Each of the two burners produces 30,000 BTUs -- enough to boil water in minutes, sear steaks properly, and run a full Dutch oven setup at controlled temperatures. The stamped steel body and cast aluminum burners handle the thermal cycling of hundreds of camp trips without warping or cracking.
The matchless ignition system works reliably in wind, and the three-sided windscreen keeps flames stable in conditions that defeat smaller backpacking stoves. The Explorer's true BIFL advantage is its modularity: the cooking surface accepts Camp Chef's full line of accessories including griddles, BBQ boxes, and pizza ovens, all of which slide on without tools.
Replacement parts including burners, regulators, and ignition systems are readily available. At roughly $160, the cost-per-year over a decade of regular camping is $16.
Car camping stoves that rust, clog, and lose their flame adjustment after a few seasons cost more in replacements than the Explorer costs once. The overbuilt construction means this stove works exactly as well on its 200th use as its first.
