The Phantom HMS is a screwgate locking carabiner forged from I-beam cross-section aluminum that achieves a 24kN gate-closed strength at only 53 grams — a strength-to-weight ratio that represents the cutting edge of carabiner engineering. The hot-forged construction (as opposed to cold-forged or stamped alternatives) produces a grain structure in the aluminum that resists fatigue cracking under repeated load cycles.
The clean nose profile feeds rope and slings smoothly without snagging, and the keylock gate eliminates the hook-type nose that catches on bolt hangers and gear loops. Every DMM carabiner is individually proof-loaded to 10kN and visually inspected before leaving the factory.
At roughly $15, a single Phantom costs less than a takeout meal and is rated to hold two tons. Climbing carabiners are retired based on visible wear indicators — sharp edges on the rope-bearing surface — not structural failure.
With normal use, a Phantom serves for 5 to 10 years before wear indicators suggest retirement. DMM's Welsh manufacturing ensures that safety-critical hardware meets European CE and UIAA certification standards with margin to spare.
