Feuerhand Baby Special 276 Hurricane Lantern

ELITE tier

Feuerhand has been stamping tubular cold-blast lanterns in Germany since 1893, and the Baby Special 276 is the last of that original line still in production anywhere in the Western world — the same design, essentially unchanged, for over ninety years.

Origin

Made in Germany

Warranty

Two-year manufacturer warranty against defects in material and workmanship; wear parts (wick, glass globe) excluded and not transferable. The product's longevity comes from its endlessly repairable design and cheap genuine German-made spare parts, not from warranty backing.

Price

~$44.95 (Budget)

The body is galvanized German steel; the globe is Schott borosilicate glass, the same heat- and shock-resistant material used in laboratory glassware. There is nothing to burn out and nothing electronic to fail: a wick, a tank, and a flame.

When a part does wear, every component — globe, wick, burner, cap — is sold as a genuine German-made spare for a few dollars, which is why owners routinely report units running past forty years. The warranty is a modest two-year defect policy, unremarkable on paper, but it is nearly beside the point for a device this simple and this repairable.

At roughly $45 for a light source that outlives its owner on five-dollar wick swaps, the cost-per-decade rounds to nothing. Keep it upright when filled, dry the steel, and it becomes the lantern that gets handed down rather than replaced.
