Each head is hand-forged by a single smith whose initials are stamped into the steel, creating a direct chain of accountability from forge to forest. The Swedish steel holds an edge through extended cutting sessions, and the convex grind profile minimizes binding in deep cuts while maintaining the thin geometry needed for clean limbing work.
The American hickory handle is shaped by hand and attached with a traditional wooden wedge and iron cross-wedge — a method that has proven superior to epoxy for long-term retention under impact forces. When a handle eventually fails after years of hard use, replacement handles are available from Gransfors Bruks and from specialty handle makers worldwide.
The head itself is essentially permanent. Gransfors Bruks offers a 20-year warranty covering manufacturing defects, though the warranty is almost academic — axes from this forge regularly serve three to four generations.
At approximately $170, the cost per year over a 30-year lifespan is under $6. This is the axe that serious woodsmen graduate to and never replace.
