Each head is hand-forged by a named smith — the maker's initials are stamped into the steel — from Swedish tool steel that holds an edge through sustained chopping and splitting tasks. The 19-inch American hickory handle is fitted through the eye with a traditional wooden wedge and steel pin, a mounting method that allows complete handle replacement when needed.
The 1. 5-pound head weight balances perfectly against the handle length for controlled one-handed limbing and campsite wood processing.
The axe arrives shaving sharp, protected by a vegetable-tanned leather sheath that is itself a quality product. Gransfors Bruks offers a 20-year warranty and sells replacement handles, sheaths, and sharpening accessories.
The head will never need replacement — it can be resharpened hundreds of times over a lifetime that should span generations. At approximately $160, the Small Forest Axe costs significantly more than hardware store alternatives, but those alternatives use stamped heads with inconsistent heat treatment that dull quickly and chip under load.
This axe was forged by a craftsman whose name is on the steel.
