The 1095 Cro-Van carbon steel blade is 7 inches long, differentially hardened to maintain a tough spine with a hard cutting edge — the same metallurgical approach used in traditional Japanese swordsmithing. The leather washer handle is stacked, compressed, and shaped to provide a secure grip even when wet with water, mud, or blood — conditions the original designers considered non-negotiable.

The blade geometry handles everything from batoning firewood to field dressing game to opening cans. Ka-Bar manufactures the 1217 in Olean, New York using the same essential design and materials as the World War II original.

The blade can be resharpened indefinitely, the leather handle can be reconditioned with oil, and the full-tang construction means there is no weak joint between blade and grip. At approximately $80, the Ka-Bar costs roughly what it cost adjusted for inflation when Marines first carried it across Pacific beaches.

Over 80 years of combat and field use have validated this knife more thoroughly than any review ever could. The Ka-Bar is not a collector's item.

It is a tool that happens to have earned its place in history.
