The Vibram XS Edge rubber compound is specifically formulated for maximum friction on small holds — harder than all-around compounds to resist deformation under load, allowing the climber's toe to transfer force directly into the rock. The lace closure provides micro-adjustable fit across the instep, eliminating the dead spots that velcro shoes create between hook-and-loop contact points.
The unlined Lorica synthetic upper conforms to the foot over time without the excessive stretch of leather. The critical BIFL feature: La Sportiva Miuras are fully resoleable.
A $50 to $70 resole from services like Rock and Resole or Yosemite Bum restores the shoe to near-original performance, extending the lifespan of a $170 shoe through three or four sole replacements. That is $170 plus $240 in resoles over 8 to 10 years of regular climbing — versus $680 in replacement shoes from brands that are not designed for resoling.
The Miura Lace has been the go-to shoe for sport and trad climbers from 5. 10 to 5.
14 because the edging precision and sensitivity scale with the climber's ability.
