It is an actual military-specification dive watch supplied to the armed forces of the United States, Canada, and allied nations under NSN (NATO Stock Number) procurement. The 41mm stainless steel case is rated to 300 meters and houses a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement, the same workhorse caliber found in watches costing three times as much.

Tritium gas tubes on the dial and hands provide constant illumination for 25 years without requiring light exposure or battery power — a critical feature for military and rescue operations in total darkness. The sapphire crystal resists scratching from impacts that would destroy mineral glass.

Marathon's 2-year warranty covers the movement, but the real durability story is in the case construction: the screw-down crown and caseback are designed to withstand pressure, shock, and corrosion from saltwater environments that would kill consumer-grade watches within months. At roughly $1,100, the GSAR costs less than most Swiss automatic dive watches while carrying actual government certification.

The watch is serviceable by any watchmaker familiar with the ETA 2824-2, and replacement crystals, crowns, and bezels are available from Marathon. This is a tool watch in the original sense — built to be used hard, maintained, and passed down.
