The design contains nothing that can quit: a solid brass tank that self-pressurizes from burner heat — no pump to crack, freeze, or lose — a built-in self-cleaning needle, and a brass windscreen topped by a 0. 6-liter aluminum cup, all in a 19-ounce package.
One documented owner bought his in 1971, tore it down at the 40-year mark, found nothing wrong, and reported it flawless at 48 years. That is not an outlier; 1960s units still turn up at garage sales in working order.
Optimus sells a $15 spare-parts kit covering every wear item — jet, needle, spindle, graphite ring — and the stove is fully field-serviceable without tools. The paper warranty is a weak two years, but the parts ecosystem and 71 years of production are the real coverage.
At $135, a stove that credibly serves 50 years costs under $3 a year. It roars like a rocket, burns only white gas, and barely simmers.
