The cam-assisted braking mechanism locks automatically during a fall, providing a safety margin that tube-style belay devices cannot match. The GriGri+ adds an anti-panic handle that locks the device if a belayer grips too aggressively during a fall -- a refinement aimed at less experienced climbers and commercial gym environments.

The body is machined aluminum and stainless steel, and Petzl subjects every unit to individual quality testing before shipment. At roughly $130, the GriGri+ costs three to four times what a basic tube device costs, but it is a lifetime purchase for most climbers.

The aluminum body does not wear out under normal use -- the only consumable is the rope channel surface, which develops wear marks over thousands of catches but remains functional for a decade or more of regular gym and outdoor climbing. Petzl provides a three-year warranty covering manufacturing defects and recommends a maximum service life of ten years for all metal equipment, though many climbers use GriGris well beyond that with regular inspection.

The anti-panic feature and top-rope mode switch make this the default recommendation for climbing gyms and guide services worldwide. This is the belay device that climbers buy once and hand down.
