The mechanism is intentional in its simplicity: a high-grade steel needle on a sapphire jewel bearing, immersed in proprietary damping liquid calibrated to perform from -22°F to 140°F, mounted in a scratch-resistant acrylic housing with a sighting mirror, integrated clinometer, and magnifying lens. There are no batteries to die, no electronics to fail, no firmware to become obsolete.
