The E3-20S is the 20-ounce straight rip-claw configuration that defined what a framing hammer should be for three generations of carpenters. The head and handle are drop-forged as one continuous piece — no joint, no glue, no wedge to loosen, no failure mode that involves the hammer separating from itself.
The shock-reduction grip is bonded to the handle and replaceable when it eventually wears through. The face is hand-polished and can be re-polished.
At roughly $30, the cost-per-decade math is unkind to every competing hammer at the price point: framing crews routinely report E3-20S units in daily service after twenty and thirty years. Estwing warrants its all-steel hammers against failure in normal use, though the warranty is non-transferable and excludes abuse.
This is the hammer in the bottom of the toolbox that outlives the toolbox. It does not absorb shock the way a titanium hammer does, but it costs roughly one-tenth as much and does not break.
Generations of framers have voted with their tool belts.
