The practical result is a thinner kerf, less wasted material, and dramatically more control than any Western push saw. Gyokucho's 770-3600 Ryoba combines a crosscut edge on one side and a rip-cut edge on the other, eliminating the need for two separate saws.
The 270mm blade length is the standard for general woodworking — long enough for dimensioning lumber, precise enough for joinery. The impulse-hardened teeth hold their edge through hundreds of board-feet, and when they eventually dull, replacement blades cost roughly $15 and snap into the rattan-wrapped handle in seconds.
This is the BIFL model at its purest: a permanent handle with consumable blades that cost a fraction of a new saw. Made in Miki City, Japan, the historical center of Japanese toolmaking.
At roughly $35 for the saw and $15 for replacement blades every few years, the lifetime cost is negligible. Western woodworkers who switch to Japanese saws rarely go back — the cut quality and control difference is not subtle.
