The No. 4 Smoothing Plane features a manganese bronze body that will never rust, a Rockwell 60-62 hardness A2 tool steel blade that holds an edge dramatically longer than the high-carbon steel in vintage planes, and machined surfaces flat to within thousandths of an inch.
The Norris-style adjuster allows blade depth and lateral adjustment with a single mechanism, eliminating the two-handed fumbling of older designs. Every component is available individually: blades, chipbreakers, cap irons, knobs, totes, and screws.
Lie-Nielsen publishes detailed maintenance guides and offers factory sharpening services. The bronze body actually improves with age, developing a warm patina while remaining dimensionally stable.
At approximately $375, this plane costs more than ten Harbor Freight smoothers — but those will chatter, jam, and frustrate their owners into quitting woodworking entirely. The cost-per-year over a 30-year career in the shop is $12.
50. Lie-Nielsen planes are routinely resold at 80 to 90 percent of retail.
This is a tool that outlasts careers.
