The 500-197-30 is the 8-inch Absolute Digimatic, built in Japan from hardened stainless steel with the ABSOLUTE scale that remembers its origin — switch it on and it reads true without re-zeroing, every time. Resolution is 0.
0005 inch with accuracy held to a thousandth, and the AOS sensor design draws so little current that a single silver-oxide cell lasts roughly three and a half years, ending the dead-battery complaint that plagued earlier electronic calipers. Mitutoyo backs it one year, extendable to three with free registration, but the warranty understates the real story: the company runs NIST-traceable repair and calibration labs that will re-certify the instrument indefinitely.
Owners report decades of accurate service. At roughly $170 the cost-per-year over a 20-year working life is a few dollars — against a bargain caliper that drifts out of tolerance and gets tossed.
One caution: counterfeits circulate on marketplaces, so buy only from Amazon-shipped or authorized dealers. This is the measuring tool a shop buys once and recalibrates forever.
