The concept is elegant: a cast iron head and tail slide onto any length of standard 3/4-inch black iron pipe, creating a clamp of virtually unlimited length for the price of a longer pipe. The fixtures themselves are cast iron — not stamped steel — with hardened clutch plates that grip pipe without slipping under heavy clamping pressure.
The screw mechanism applies even, controllable force for edge-gluing, panel assembly, and furniture construction. These fixtures have no practical wear-out mechanism.
The cast iron does not fatigue, the clutch plates do not round over, and the screw threads do not strip. If a pipe gets bent, replacement pipe costs a few dollars at any hardware store.
Professional cabinet shops run the same Pony fixtures for decades, and home woodworkers inherit them from grandparents still fully functional. At roughly $20 per fixture set, building a full clamp rack costs a fraction of equivalent bar clamps and delivers superior versatility.
