The cast iron body is massively overbuilt — the jaws open to 15 inches, the guide bars are precision-ground steel, and the half-nut quick-release mechanism allows rapid jaw positioning without endless cranking. These vises were standard equipment in British school workshops, professional cabinet shops, and home benches for over six decades.
The cast iron does not flex, the Acme screw does not strip, and the guide bars do not wear oval. While Record ceased UK production and the brand passed through several owners, original and NOS (new old stock) units remain available through used tool markets, and the current production under Irwin maintains the same fundamental design.
Replacement screws, guide bars, and hardware are available from multiple suppliers. A properly mounted Record 52-1/2 is a permanent installation — it bonds to the bench and becomes part of the shop's infrastructure.
Many woodworkers consider this the finest front vise ever manufactured.
