Reed Manufacturing TC1Q Quick Release Tubing Cutter
ELITE tier
Reed Manufacturing has been making pipe and tubing tools in Erie, Pennsylvania since 1896, and the Quick Release tubing cutter is their own invention -- still the industry standard 70 years on.
Origin
Made in USA
Warranty
Reed 5-year warranty on hand tools against defects in materials and workmanship
Price
~$80 (Budget)
The TC1Q cuts copper, aluminum, light wall steel, and stainless tubing from 1/8 to 1-5/16 inches, and the die-cast zinc aluminum sliding bar zips open with a trigger pull for cutter changes that take seconds rather than minutes. A reamer folds out of the body for deburring; a spare cutter wheel lives in the knob.
The five-year warranty is unusual for a hand tool, and Reed sells every replacement part separately -- sliding bars, roller pins, cutter wheels, complete repair kits -- meaning the cutter is essentially infinitely rebuildable. Plumbers run these for entire careers and pass them to apprentices.
At $80, the cost-per-year over a 30-year working life is under $3 -- less than a single replacement of a $20 cutter from a big-box brand. The TC1Q is the tool a tradesman buys once and never thinks about again.
