The Low-Angle Block Plane uses a ductile iron body that is stronger and more shock-resistant than the gray cast iron found in vintage planes. The A2 tool steel blade holds an edge significantly longer than the O1 steel common in older block planes, and the Norris-style adjuster provides blade depth and lateral adjustment from a single knob — an elegant mechanical solution that eliminates the fiddling required by traditional designs.
The 12-degree bed angle combined with a 25-degree blade bevel yields an effective cutting angle of 37 degrees, low enough for clean end-grain work while still performing on face grain. At approximately $190, this is not a casual purchase, but it is a permanent one.
Replacement blades cost around $30 and last years between sharpenings. The plane itself will outlast the woodworker who buys it.
Lee Valley backs it with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, and every component is available as a separate spare part.
