The keycaps are dye-sublimated PBT, with legends dyed into the plastic itself, immune to the shine and fade that erase markings on cheaper ABS caps within a year. Genuine German Cherry MX switches, rated around 50 million actuations, sit on a metal plate inside a rigid case that reviewers consistently rank above boards costing more.
The one compromise worth naming is the older mini-USB port rather than a modern USB-C connector; typists working from a fixed spot will rarely notice. The switches are soldered, so a dead key is a soldering repair rather than a swap, but Cherry MX hardware is standard and endlessly available.
At roughly $110 across fifteen years of daily use, the VA87M costs about seven dollars a year, a fraction of the membrane boards it replaces. It is a serious typing instrument priced like a commodity, and it meets the buy-it-for-life standard on materials that simply do not wear out.
